2011-2012 Season

During the 2011-2012 season, the St.Petersburg Museum of Theater and Musical Arts continues its concert series played on original and rebuilt musical instruments from many different countries and epochs.

There is a reason that the name of general-leutenant baron K. K. Shtakelberg is repeated year after year in concert series titles. This unique individual became an important figure in Russian culture as the organizer of the very first professional city orchestra and the owner of a unique collection of musical instruments, which is the principal part of the current collection of the Museum of Music in the Sheremetyevo Palace. K.K.Shtakelberg dreamed of finding and revealing the sound of all instruments on this planet, including the earliest ones, whose voices no one has ever heard! It was his idea to create a series of concerts, which were to be played on historic baroque instruments or on their exact copies.
Concerts like this were played in St.Petersburg at the beginning of the Twentieth Century and now, after one hundred years, this wonderful tradition has been revived. Compositions of European and Russian masters of the XV-XIX centuries are played at our «Musical Fridays» both on copies of museum instruments and on original instruments which are the work of ancient masters. Lectures are prepared in an easy to understand dialogue with the audience, and museum staff prepare detailed information for each performance, containing interesting facts about the instruments, music, and the museum collection.

We invite all lovers of chamber music to enjoy the sound of rare and forgotten instruments! Come to the Sheremetyevo Palace for the Musical Fridays of Baron Shtakelberg!

The principal authors of the concert series are musicians of the baroque music ensemble «New Holland» (artistic director Pavel Andreev). The ensemble is known in St.Petersburg and beyond as a highly professional group of musicians, famous for their authentic performances of baroque and classical music. Over the years the ensemble has performed in baroque music series at the Maly Hall of the St.Petersburg Philarmonic, as well as in other well-known concert halls, in Russia and abroad. The ensemble records their performance of baroque music on audio discs, and part of these recordings are made using instruments from the museum collection.
This year marks the 12th season of the concert-lectures, dedicated to European musical instruments. In 2009 the baroque music ensemble «New Holland», dedicated artistic partner of the Museum of Theater and Musical Arts, celebrated its twentieth anniversary.
